A Look Back at Our May 4th Art & Theatre Event

How to Fight for Your Child’s IEP: A Guide from Someone Who’s Been There
February 24, 2025

On May 4th, 2025, the Art Foundation for People with Disabilities hosted an unforgettable event that brought together creativity, courage, and community. Our annual Theatre Recital & Art Exhibit was more than just a showcase—it was a heartfelt celebration of inclusion, imagination, and the power of expression.

Rooted in Us: A Theatre Recital of Strength and Spirit

The evening began with “Rooted in Us: A Celebration of Strength, Nature, and Dreams,” an original recital created and performed by a group of exceptional individuals with disabilities. After months of rehearsal, our performers took to the stage with stories close to their hearts—each scene a tribute to nature, resilience, and self-discovery.

Through movement, dance, music, and storytelling, the ensemble reminded us all of the importance of being true to ourselves and of recognizing the strength that lies within. Their message was clear: We are strong even when challenged. We matter even when misunderstood. Our dreams are uniquely our own.

Directed by the experienced and passionate Christian Ocón, a seasoned artist with over 40 years in theatre across Latin America and the U.S., the recital resonated with energy, vulnerability, and hope. Christian’s leadership continues to be instrumental in creating a safe, empowering space where every performer shines.

Unbound: An Art Exhibit That Redefined Expression

Running alongside the recital was “Unbound: Expressions Beyond Limits,” an inspiring art exhibit featuring work by our student artists. From vivid paintings to imaginative mixed media and digital compositions, each piece was a bold and beautiful expression of the artist’s world—telling stories of identity, connection, and difference.

This wasn’t just an art show. It was an experience. Visitors were invited to not only view the work, but to feel it— to engage with each creation on a personal level and to witness how creativity transcends barriers.

“Unbound” challenged assumptions about communication and capability. It showed how art can be a powerful tool for visibility, healing, and joy. Every canvas, every color, every texture echoed a single truth: There is no limit to what our artists can do.

A Community Effort

We are deeply grateful to everyone who made this event possible—our dedicated artists, their loving families, committed volunteers, and generous community partners. Your belief in inclusive arts fuels everything we do and helps us build a world where every voice is heard and celebrated.

As we look back on this special day, we hold close the laughter, the applause, the quiet moments of reflection, and the overwhelming sense of pride. Thank you for joining us. Thank you for believing in our artists.

Here’s to continuing our mission—to empower, to inspire, and to create without limits.
